Default Pinion and driveshaft angle help.

Hey guys,

First things first: I got a 2000 XJ - 4.0 - AW4 - NP242 - 3 inch lift - 31's - 1.25in transfer case drop and I got a stock slip yoke driveshaft.

So I recently did my first axle swap, made a bunch of mistakes and ended up with a terrible pinion angle, just need some advice regarding angles and shims etc.

Bought a C 8.25 to swap out my D35 from a guy that removed the leaf spring perches, I think he was gonna do a coil conversion or something.
Anyway, I had to put them back and welded them at 0*. I did the swap and with the vehicles full weight the pinion dropped by 3*.
The angles looked severe and very different from what they were before, I checked my old D35 angle, which gave me very minimal vibes, and lone behold it points up 6*, thats a 9* difference.

I'm aware I need to shim, but the question is how much.
My output shaft points down 4*
Driveshaft angle is 15*
Pinion angle points down 3*

I'm guessing I need a 6 or 7 degree shim? I read somewhere that you want your pinion about 1* lower than output angle to compensate for acceleration?

Will the shims also reduce the actual driveshaft angle? and if so can you calculate it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Try a 6 deg shim, and if it don't work, try a 4 next.

I'd go with 2-3 deg down for acceleration, not 1.

Shims will change all those angles.

Thanks man, will try 6* first.

Took it for a drive, have some weird vibes going slow and then so some rank grinding noise on deceleration when going fast...really hoping its driveline angles and not pinion bearing

Are you going to install a SYE and install a new rear drive shaft with a Double Cardan joint ?

No just going to try and get the two angles to match. Was working fine with the Dana 35, before.

So a mate of mine had a set of 8 degree shims, so out of impatience just decided to just give em a go.
Absolutely solved the problem, zero vibes except when I step on it up a hill, but totally manageable - @TRCM you were right, 6 degrees would be perfect, but hey this is good enough for me right now.
I gambled and got rid of my t case drop and it rides better than with previous setup. Such a bonus, hated that drop.

Muuuuch better
