Shimmy at 50mph
Hi All, so I've done my searching, and I understand that this can be a few different issues, so I'm trying to get your guys opinions.
Like stated, I have a shimmy at 50mph. I can obviously feel it, and you can see the steering wheel shacking/shimmying back and forth. Then goes away once I get close to 60. It's always there, under acceleration, coasting, braking.
What I've noticed. It's most noticeable early on while I'm driving. Once I've been on the road for a bit it seems to go away (at least during acceleration). It's there but minimal when coasting down through that speed, and it's pretty ****ty when I have to brake hard in that speed range. But ONLY happens in that speed range, so I don't think it's rotors.
I've gotten under there a couple times and haven't found anything loose. Although I do need to replace the tie rod at the pitman arm (the boot is shot). I just don't want to start throwing things at it, when I've only noticed that the pitman arm tierod needs to be replaced.
Any test I can perform to find my issue, or rule out any others?
Thanks,
Tom

Start the Jeep up and look at all your steering linkage, track bar, control arm etc. Have someone else move the steering wheel back and forth while you inspect everything. I would have them move the steering wheel slowly and also rapidly back and forth. That should show you any worn bushing or tie rods. I would also check your hub bearings buy jacking the tire up just off the ground on one side and using leverage to pick the tire up from the bottom to see if there is any play in the hub bearing.

Cool, thanks. I'll see what I find.
I know this could be from a few different things, but is there something I should be looking for over the others? As nice as it would be for it to be the pitman arm TRE, I doubt it'll be that simple.
Something else I've noticed... Its kind of always done this in the 2 years I've had it. Although it seems to be getting worse. But, in the winter I never notice a shimmy. it wasn't until it started getting hot out again that I started noticing it again. So thats interested.

I agree it is likely tires. It goes away or lessens as you've been driving and the tire pressure raises. I had a similar vibe at 48-52 ish and I've seen others post the same. I gave up on it and it disappeared on its onw with wear. Came back at a different speed. Not saying definitively but it is probable.

It's very possible they could be unbalanced. I've had them balanced like 3 or 4 times in the last year, but it's been a while since the last. They have to use the sticky weights and they kept falling off. I finally just gave up on it. They couldn't use the clip on ones cause there isn't enough lip around the wheel to use em.

What kind of wheels, have they bitten into a curb? The last time I had to remove sticky weights I needed dynamite so something is greasy, oily, pacific cheapies here.

They're American Racing alloy wheels. They probably didn't wipe down the area or something. It's the sticky weights that go on the inside of the wheel.
