I found a ad on craigslist with (2) dana 44s off a 1987 jeep grand wagoneer both are low pinion and front is drivers side diff. He wants 350 for both should i consider these?

Waggy 44's are a good swap. The front is DSD so you wouldnt have to do any crazy driveline mods. (but if your doing an axle swap your prob. not scared of mods.) Any ideas on condition? Pics!

Those look to be off the full size Cherokee. They will be wider than our smaller cherokees and you will have to fab up new mounting. Plus the 2.73 is really low! You will definatly have to regear.

Those axles are the axles you want. They are perfect for what you want. These are the closest to XJ width.

The above posters who said these are full width need to research how wide stock axles are. That is an average price. I would try to get it a lil cheaper, but still not a bad deal.

If you want to do Waggy axles the best years to pick from are 80-84 because during those years the pumpkin sits at right about the perfect spot so that it does not interfere with the track bar bracket or coil. You will definitely need to cut the knuckles off and rotate them to get the proper caster. If you are going to do that much work in my opinion it would be more worth your time to source a 44 from a 70-76 ford. Then you would cut the knuckles off, shorten the tubes to fit waggy shafts, then rotate the knuckles to get the right castor for your lift and weld them back on. It does not involve too much more work than using a waggy axle, but you would end up with a high pinion 44 that can take stock waggy shafts. Check out this link for more details on how to do it.

Hmmmmm. Then the 88 Cherokee wagoneer that I had was a full size Wagoneer but on a starvation diet. You know the one with 4 headlights and woodgrain on the side.
It had 44s front and back (Tow package) but I didn't have anywhere to keep it or it's parts and it had to go. It also didn't have provisions for locking hubs.

BTW take another look at the picture in the ad. It has 6 wheel studs

You do know that AMC was producing 2 different models of Cherokees at the same time don't you? One a full size J10-J20 and our smaller version. They both had a wagoneer trim option.

Yes I am aware of this.. but the XJ waggy did not have 44's front and rear SO it would have to be the larger one using common sense

Umm, you'll find many threads on this site telling others to search out the 87 to 89 XJ wagoneers to find D44s that are a direct swap for their D30 and 35.
And my 88 had them. I just wish I could have found a place to store them, untill I could have used them.
