Some people want their engine bay to look different from any other 2000-2001 there's nothing wrong with that.
So then for some people it IS just a cosmetic fad.

I admit im appalled at the lack of factual evidence in the difference of these coi l pack options and that people are saying this is a cosmetic fad in this thread. The guy who coined this swapped at least tried to provide some proof in the difference of their coil windings and resistances. Seems like in this thread its just pure speculation.

In my personal opinion a coil rail is a flawed design for someone who wants to have readily available access to an individual spar k plug without disturbing the continuity of the remaining spar k plugs.

Nobody here who did or wants to do the coil change said anything about this being only a "Cosmetic Fad", Just ExtraShakey said that. He sees no advantage to it and that is fine, but that is what it is all...... about building your vehicle is to personalize it.

I personally did not push the "Performance Advantages" because that is not why I did it nor is it discussed much in what I believe is the first big talk about the "Viper Coil Swap" which was on "Jeep Strokers" by SilverXJ, and if you read through that you will see I participated in some of that thread as "BryWeb" at the bottom of page 3.

Regarding plug wires, as I already said I used a set of a Caravan (from the junkyard) Many just cut the original wire loom in the jeep and extend it, but I did not want to... so I made an extension cable so I could go back to stock easily if I wanted to. Some have just mounted it on the firewall and the original wire reaches it, and made or got longer spark plug wires. Not sure what you are all worried about, its not like you can't just plug your old coil back in if it does not work....and go to work on Monday.
Hey do you by anychance know the order of the wiring to solder we are doing the same thing and cut the plug can't find anything with a wiring diagram.

Its a straight through wiring on the extension for XJ's, only on WJ's does the wiring change.

That is exactly what I did with the old BAD coil, cut off the connection on the coil end, soldered wires on, slipped shrink tube on each connection, then coated it with liquid tape.

I used some basic sheet metal and did a basic u shape bend with tabs to use the same screws that hold the overflow bottle to its bracket, and mounted the coil to it.

until it is mounted and therefor grounded, I would be safe and use one of the mounting holes and ground the coil with a wire to ground. - I did not and might have killed a Junkyard coil, and while troubleshooting the coil killed the PCM - I have no idea if it was related to not being grounded, or was a bad coil, or ????, the PCM I am guessing smoked a capacitor or a few as an oil substance poured out of it after removed.

.

I am confused??? You should be making an extension cord for the coil with that, that piece plugs into what use to plug into the coil, you add 2' 4-wire extension to a plug that is plugged into a similar (to the viper) coil you grab off a Caravan or similar at the junkyard.

Or you don't need that piece at all and you simply extend the wire that went to the old coil, but I did not want cut up my harness myself.
