This may be a stock XJ question or it could be a modified one.
In the early days of XJ did it come with movable wing windows. My 95 has fake wing windows and my 97 has all window in the front doors. I want to find (if they exist) XJ doors with wing windows that work for my off-road 97 so I can remove the AC unit.
Fat chance or possible??
Let's start by saying.... 96- are the split window and all 97+ are single window units.
2nd part, I don't believe you can put 96- window guts/track etc into the 97 doors. I could be wrong but i dont think its being done?
3rd part, if I'm not wrong, 97 is still post style door latch vs the later new body style that has the "bar loop" or ring latch setup. If this is true then I think your simplest solution would be to just find a set of the older 96- doors and either convert them to wing window if they don't already have them.
Around myself in Michigan they have gotten harder to come by, admittedly I've bought junkers whole just for the doors/wing windows for this same reason. They are nostalgic and very functional for a rig with not functional AC. Honestly try to put then in every 96- older jeep I have
The windows are interchangeable so it's just a matter of finding them. May not be so difficult, as fitting the later one piece glass to pre-'97's is quite popular among off-roaders, as it provides a bigger opening to hang out of.
Almost positive I have seen a Bleepin' Jeep video about putting the '97 and up one whole window in a '96 and down.
If so have to assume the opposite is true but how much work that would take is the question.
My thinking is to do this you need to find two whole doors.
Just so that you will have everything you might need to pull this off.
Well I have found a 92 and a 89 both 4 doors that have the movable wing window. I don’t right now want to become a XJ salvage yard. So at least I know what year to look for in the doors. They will turn up.
Row 52 website is a good place to look, they cover all the pick n pull yards, and in most all case provide a photo of the car, so you can see if it has wing windows or not. just put in the make, model, and year range you want to search and your zip code and search radius. I have found many great XJ parts near me with Row 52 website. Look daily as the inventory can change daily. In time you will find what you seek. Hot tip, install two door XJ seats in your 4 door XJ, the 2 door seat s fold forward, making getting things from the back via the front door easy AND if you set up the rear to sleep in, you can gain more space with the forward folding seats. I used row 52 to find a two door xj, with the correct seat upholstery and scored them, so happy!!!!
