Greetings! A new Jeep Owner from NY.
Hello everyone. I finally decided to make an account after reading SEVERAL great posts, and learning quite a bit about XJs from them.
Let me introduce myself, before I introduce the beast (because it looks like one, not because it is one. ). My name is Dallas, I am 26, and am from Buffalo, NY. I am a single father to a little girl who is already starting a love for cars, and finally decided to enter the realm of the Jeeps.
I've owned mostly GM products from an 84 Vette, 95 lifted S-10, 98 turbo'd Cavalier Z24, 98 Saturn 98 1500 sport; and others such as: 01 Stratus R/T, 98 Civic Si hatch, and a 98 Del Sol Si. I've been a car lover for years, and decided it's time to start a project, that would serve as a DD, even as it was transformed into something that is a mirror of my personality.
On Monday, I get to pick up Sheila, a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport. 4x4, power everything, oh, and she has a bad motor. Also needs a new passenger side rocker, some minor body work where there is some surface rust, before I line the lower part of the body with Bed Armor.
I decided to go with a project Jeep because I wanted to make it my own. I wanted the satisfaction of knowing that I learned most of the work, by doing it on my own vehicle. That, and I got the Jeep for $400, a buddy is selling me a good engine for $100 (with everything but the water pump), and that gives me extra money to get the body work done, and maybe re-color the thing since shes not the best looking right now.
Immediate plans:
- Replace motor and get it running
- Install new breaks in front and rear
- Replace bad outer rocker on passenger side
- Install a budget 3" lift
- Purchase new tires (looking at 30s)
- Get rid of the surface rust. Treat then line the bottom portion with Bed Armor, since it will see some abuse.
- Have fun.
I thought about painting the upper portion myself, or even doing the terrible thing of plasti dipping until I can go get a good solid paintjob once all the work is done.
If you have ideas, let me know.
This is going to be my baby, after she gets some tough love, and a lift job, and a color change because I hate this blue for some reason.
This is the rocker that's shot. Not rotter through the inner rocker, but definitely needs attention. Any advice on how to do this right would be appreciated.
This... well, this was #1 sign to knowing it had some major issues... correct me if I am wrong, but your coolant shouldn't look like hot chocolate.

Thank you. And most may not like it, but, I am going black. Like all but three cars/trucks that I have owned have been black, and I just prefer the darker color.
Thanks man. Good to see some locals on here. Will definitely help when I run into something I have no idea what I am doing.

Hi Dallas,
I just brought home my 1996 Cherokee Sport yesterday, and joined here as well. It will be great to see any progress you make on the vehicle. That blue is my favorite Cherokee color. The one I just picked up is black.
I'm around Syracuse.
Congrats! Good Luck!
