Towing specs on 2019 Cherokee
Hey everyone,
First timer and recent owner of a 2019 Jeep Cherokee limited (2.0 4cyl turbo) 4x4. My cherokee didn't come with a tow package, and I'm looking to tow a small boat. I'm going to get a 2" hitch installed, but I'm unsure of what kind of capacity I can expect. I've seen varying things online, so I'm hoping for clarification on towing capacity. I've seen "max towing capacity" online, but I don't know if this is only achieved with certain packages added on, or if it is standard for this trim. Additionally, I'm not sure whether my cherokee already has a wiring harness installed. Appreciate the help!
Additionally, I pulled my build sheet and found it includes a 180 amp alternator, trailer sway damping, 3.734 final drive ratio, engine oil cooler, and auxiliary transmission oil cooler. This all seems to be in line with the tow package, and the only thing I'm missing is the hitch receiver and maybe wiring? Being that these options seem in line with the tow package, I'm curious what separates the 2000lb tow capacity vs 4500 lbs?

The towing capacity depends on the alternator and engine size, plus the transmission and cooling system setup. The 3.2L V6 tows the most at 4,500#, while the 2.0T I4 in your Jeep does 4,000#, and the 2.4L I4 tows the least at 2,000#. I would definitely see what's included in the Trailer Tow Group that was optional on the Cherokee, and see what it takes to upgrade your components before adding an aftermarket hitch. I know a family friend who bought our old '02 Grand Cherokee WJ with the 4.7L V8 and NO tow package, and just added a tow hitch, and nothing else. Combined with a 100+ mile commute to work 2-3 days a week, PLUS towing a small boat, he ended up blowing the head gasket in his engine. I wouldn't recommend that if you're going to be towing anything other than dead weight.
