Default Spitting and sputterin

I've got a 1995 xj and here's what its doing.most of the time it does this first thing in the morning. I get in and Crank It Up and it's idling okay so I let off the gas and all the sudden it acts like it's starting to die then it'll pick back up run smooth for a second act like it's going to die again pick back up run good and so forth. I'll let it warm up for a bit then I'll take off and when I'm going down the road all the sudden it starts spitting and backfiring through the carburetor not wanting to accelerate so I let off the gas put it in neutral and it idles and revs up fine put it back in drive give it gas and it starts spitting and sputtering again. It does this or maybe 30-45 seconds of me having to let off the gas drive a little bit further letting off the gas spit and sputtering and etc... finally it'll quit doing that but sometimes like I say after I've been driving for a little while stop at a store or something get back in it it'll start doing it again just not quite as much and then it'll clear up could this be a Tps module or something to that nature going out?
