Jensen accusound in a 87 : amp or not ?
Hi,
I am wondering if there is an amplifier In the setup of a 87 XJ Wagoneer limited.
I plan to help a friend improving its sound system.
he changed the faulty headunit But gets a distorted sound.
-< so I wonder if there isn’t an amp in the harness.
If not, I’ll change the speakers.
-< are there some tweeters aswell ?
another question
-< you tend to say we can fit 6,5 speakers instead of 5.25 without change in the door or panel. Is it right ?
thanks guys

From what I've been able to google, there was no amp in the Accusound package. The speakers were the upgrade and I'm sure by now they're shot. From what I've found is 2 speakers in the lower dash (tweeters) 2 in the doors and 2 in the Hatch for the Accusound system.
You can fit 6.5's in the doors if you are careful as some do require a bit of a trim of the door opening. There shouldn't been any needed for the door panel. If you don't feel comfortable with trimming I'd suggest sticking with the 5.25's.

I know the newer (1997-2001) Infinity system had "Mini-Amps" located on each front door speaker that could be reused with aftermarket speakers, or eliminated altogether when you install aftermarket speakers. Not sure about the Jensen AccuSound system. I know the early (1993) Grand Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer ZJ's had a 120-watt amp under the rear seats. Each "Mini Amp" in the XJ's power that side of the vehicle's speakers (for example, the front driver's door "Mini-Amp" powers all left-side speakers (front/rear), and the front passenger door "Mini-Amp" powers all right-side speakers (front/rear). The 2002-07 Liberty KJ's were like that as well. Although I don't think the old Grand Wagoneer SJ's had amps, so the early (1984-1996) XJ's might not, either.

check the wiring out in the door fold , that rubber piece inside the door jamb where wires pass through, it may have a wire that is barely hanging together that needs repair- but first move the doors back and forth and make sure because it’s a pita to do that job.
My guess is the speakers are horrible looking since each time I get a new to me xj the speakers are always disentrigrating lol
just buy 5.25” speakers, with today’s tech they sound just as good as 6.5” especially in a door that’s not treated.
and no they won’t fit without a special adapter ring or cutting sheet metal so it’s really not worth trying to go up in size unless your an audio nut like me and are going to do crazy amounts of work to ensure it sounds as good as it possibly could.

You're right. The simplest the best.
I'll add adhesive foam of this kind in the doors.
Hopefully it will reduce noise AND improve sound
Found on AliExpress.

I plan to stick a panel on the metal, inside the door.
Not covering it in full, but behind the speaker and a large central part of the door.
Any advice ?
