Jeep Cherokee 1984-2001: How to Replace Dome Light
In addition to replacing the dome light, you might have reasons to replace other lights on your Cherokee. Brighter lights? Longer-lasting bulbs? You can purchase all you need from retailers with an automotive department or online.
This article applies to the Jeep Cherokee (1984-2001).
The dome lights in your Jeep Cherokee give you light to read maps with, to check on the kids, and to look for your keys when you lose them. If they burn out, you'll want to replace them pronto. The replacement process is basically the same for 1984-2001 models with a few exceptions.
Materials Needed
- Flat head screwdriver
- New light bulbs (incandescent or LED)
Step 1 – Remove dome light module
- 1996 and earlier model years: Very gently and slowly, use the flat head screwdriver to pry around the the dome light and button module until it pops off. The module comes off as one piece.
- 1997 to 2001 model years: Grasp the dome light module and push the module towards the front of the Cherokee. It will unlock and release so you can change bulbs.
Pro Tip
Once you remove the dome module, you can replace the bulb. It is not necessary to take the lens cover off.
Step 2 – Replace the bulbs
- Install new incandescent bulbs to replace your burnt out bulbs. Or, replace the incandescent ones with new LED bulbs for a brighter, longer-lasting light.

Step 3 – Test new bulbs
- After installing a new bulb, turn on the dome light switch to make sure the bulb is seated securely and lights up.
Pro Tip
Most LEDs are plug-and-play; there's no need to install the new receptacles or re-wire them.
Step 4 – Reinstall dome light module
- After you have replaced the bulbs and tested them, gently snap the dome light modules back into place.
Pro Tip
One Cherokee owner reported a significant drop in power usage (from 12 amps to 4) when he installed LEDs inside and out.
