This article applies to the Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee (1984-2004).

We are used to seeing heavy machinery mount our tires on the wheels. Although it is recommended to mount the tire using the machine, it is very doable without it as well. The process shouldn't take more than 10 minutes, and it can be done at home. You just need to be very careful not to scratch your rim while trying to mount the tire on your Jeep Cherokee's wheel. So if you're feeling strong, here's how to do it yourself.

Materials Needed

  • Spray bottle with soapy water
  • Cardboard cut out in diameter of wheel/tire
  • Pry bar

Step 1 – Prepare to mount the tire

Cut out a piece of cardboard slightly larger than the outside diameter of the wheel and tire. Lay it flat on the ground and lay the wheel in the center. Spray around the inside seal of the tire with soapy water to lubricate it and make it easier to slide on the wheel.

Step 2 – Slide the tire on the wheel

Position the tire onto the rim and firmly press down around the inside bead to slide it in place. You will most likely need to stand on the tire and use your legs and feet to put enough pressure on it to get it into place. Once you get the inside in place, spray around the outside bead of the tire with your soapy water.

Step 3 – Finish mounting tire

Push the bottom inside bead of the tire inside the rim, and then hold it down with your knees. Place a pry bar in between the tire as well as rim and push outward to slide the bead inside the rim, working your way around the tire to get it completely in place. If you have tire pressure monitoring hardware inside your wheels, be very careful not to damage it. Inflate the tire to the recommended specifications and make sure to get the tire balanced by a reputable professional before heading on the road.
