This article applies to the Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ (1993-1998).

So it's those pesky liftgate struts that have been making the loading and unloading of your Jeep Grand Cherokee a real chore. Well, you don't have to put up with it anymore. The liftgate struts are what keep your liftgate opened when you push it up. When they go bad, they stop holding the door up, and thus letting it drop on your head. The solution is to replace them. It's a task so easy that anyone can do it. Just make sure you have a friend to help you for safety's sake. So let's get started and swap the broken ones out.

Materials Needed

  • Large pic
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Socket wrench set or electric driver with sockets and driver bits
  • Appropriate length of board to hold the door up
  • A good assistant

Step 1 – Remove liftgate struts

Using the large pic, pop off the clip at the bottom of the strut. To access the upper mounting bracket, the gate panel must be removed. Use a Phillips head screwdriver for this. Now, remove the two screws holding the upper bracket. The strut will now come free from the bottom mount. Remove the mounting bracket from the old strut by pulling out the pin.

Step 2 – Install new strut

Attach the mounting bracket to the new strut using the pin. Screw the bracket with the strut and into the liftgate with the two screws. Push the lower end of the strut onto the mounting pin. It should just pop on.

Pro Tip

You may need a pair of pliers to rotate the strut in order to clip it onto the mounting point.

Step 3 – Remove and install the other liftgate strut

Repeat Step 1 and 2 on the other strut.
