This article applies to the Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ (1993-1998).

The windshield wipers on your Jeep play multiple roles. They can wipe off gunk and dust on the windshield before you start driving, but most commonly, they help you drive safer under inclement weather conditions by clearing your windshield of any rain or snow. There are multiple parts to your rear wiper that allow it to function, such as the arm, the rubber blade, and the motor that moves it all. Unfortunately, the wiper motor may sometimes give out after some time because of wear and tear, rendering it useless. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to replace the motor of your Grand Cherokee's rear window wiper assembly.

Materials Needed

  • 13 and 18mm sockets
  • Ratchet and extension
  • 1" box wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver

Step 1 – Remove the tailgate trim panel

Before accessing the wiper motor, you must first remove the trim panel that covers the inside of the tailgate.

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove 14 screws located around the edges of the panel.
  • Gently pop off the panel with your hands, making sure to unsnap the plastic clips.
  • Set the panel aside in a safe area where it won't get damaged.

Step 2 – Remove the window wiper motor

With the cover off, you can now start to remove the wiper motor assembly.

  • Use a ratchet and 13mm socket to remove the nut from the outer wiper arm.
  • Then use a 1" box wrench to remove the bigger nut that follows. This nut may require more force to remove.
  • Head to the inside of the trunk and use an 18mm socket to remove the two bolts holding the motor housing in place.
  • Then disconnect the motor's wire harness, and fully remove the motor from the tailgate.

Step 3 – Install the new window wiper motor

Install the new wiper motor in reverse order to the steps above.

  • Mount the new wiper motor on the tailgate.
  • Tighten down the motor using the two 18mm bolts.
  • Connect the motor's wire harness.
  • Tighten down the two wiper arm nuts.
  • Snap on the tailgate trim panel cover.
  • Tighten down the panel using the 14 Phillips screws.
