finally found some time to get under my jeep. I swapped all three solenoids and replaced the filter. Seems to have solved the problem for now, however the fluid that came out was very dark and smelled burnt. I'm not sure what this indicates. Should I be concerned that more of the transmission was damaged than just the solenoids? Or was the solenoid problem what caused the burnt fluid?
Probably the latter, or maybe not.
Don't sweat it. Change the fluid several times, as recommended, or follow the recommendation in my sig for a complete and completely safe flush.
You are probably good to go for another 50 or 100 thousand miles.
(But service it regularly!)

Give it up? the ignorance of some people is great. So what if it was a recommendation? Hate to tell you but that's what dealers use the the AW4. But you go ahead and do what you want

I think Turbo misunderestimated. I think you need this:

Hey you all, My owners manual says that the +3 is only to be used in transmissions behind the 2.5L engine. If the trans is behind the 4.0L to use Dexron III 0r Mercon nothing about Mercon III. This is from the '99 owners manual.
