I chopped the muffler clean off on my first car. I had an 89 CRX with a B16. Loved that thing so much. But yeah, live and learn.
To the OP, there are some cheap mods you can do to make your jeep look cool though. I've always liked the trimmed front bumper. It kind of has that same aggressive, angular look of angry eyes but it's somewhat functional and doesn't hurt anything. Here's a couple pics. Also check this link out for home made mods.

Lot of guys here had or have angry eyes, i had em until they started to strip. I never had light issues but thats just me. Alot of guys have gave me crap for it and alot of guys loved it. do anything to your rig that doesnt improve quality and the purist are going to want your head man. up to you its your vehicle i used electric tape....its removable.

Seriously, it's your jeep. Try electrical tape first and drive it for a couple weeks. See if you hate it.
XJ headlights do suck, and even a slight reduction in light can render them nearly useless.
How bout a pic of the jeep? Maybe we can give you some nice inexpensive suggestions to help personalize it.
